The St. Andrews Creative Playground was built in 1993 solely through the efforts of the community’s 1500 residents. The project resulted in what is one of Canada’s most impressive play structures – but more than that, it promoted a sense of ownership and pride which has had lasting benefits for the community. This unique and creative playground has become a part of St. Andrews heritage – children from all over the world come to play on it.
However, in the 20 years since its construction, the structure has degraded and requires extensive repairs and maintenance in order to bring it up to the current standards required. Without the required repairs the playground will be demolished. Funds and many volunteers are required to resurface the wooden playground structure, replace existing slides and repair broken equipment. Wooden decking and hand railings will be replaced with composite material to prolong the life of the structure, eliminate splinters and meet new safety regulations. The structure will be made of a mix of wood and composite material. The creative original pieces of the structure will be preserved. The original design, created over 20 years ago, will remain.
Robert Leathers and Associates, the original playground creators, have been contracted to lead the restoration project. Canadian safety standards will be ensured by a team from Leathers who will be in charge of the on-site building project. At the end of the project, the St. Andrews Creative Playground will once again meet all Canadian playground standards and will be a safe place for children to play and learn for another 20 years.
